First Nations Stewardship

First Nations Governance & Sustainability

BC First Nations Forestry Council is developing new approaches and models which embody shared decision-making and support respectful government-to-government relationship building.

We look to promote meaningful involvement of First Nations in land use planning and work towards shared stewardship decision-making, particularly on priority decisions, including Timber Supply Review, Forest Stewardship Plans and wildlife management.

BC Provincial Government Mandate: Implementing UNDRIP

On July 28, 2017, Premier John Horgan sent a mandate letter to the Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural
Resource Operations and Rural Development (FLNRORD) setting out priority areas of work that includes
reviewing forest policies, programs and legislation to determine how to bring the Principles of the United
Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) into action in BC.

Preparing for and implementing a mandate on UNDRIP requires significant investment in First Nations communities towards governance capacity, and lands and resources offices.
